About TAPWAK

The Association of People With AIDS in Kenya (TAPWAK) was founded in 1990 by 15 people living with HIV/AIDS, to address their health problems, share their personal experiences and give each other support and encouragement.

The HIV & AIDS pandemic continues to pose a great challenge in Kenya. While prevalence has declined from a peak of 15% 5 years ago to 7% today, the rate of new infections remains unacceptably high at an adjusted incidence of 7% of infection in those adults tested. The implication of this is that a total of 1.1 million adult Kenyans, of whom two thirds are women, are infected with HIV. In addition, an estimated 100,000 children are living with HIV.

Our Vision

Our vision is a Kenyan society where there are no new HIV/AIDS infections and where those infected or affected lead quality lives, without discrimination or stigmatisation.

Mission Statement

TAPWAK exists to support people living with HIV & AIDS and the affected in Kenya through effective education and advocacy as well as provision of emotional, social, economic and medical support.

Guiding Principles

  1. TAPWAK believes in a just and compassionate society in which all affected and infected by HIV & AIDS lead quality lives without discrimination or stigmatisation.

  2. TAPWAK believes in being an accountable and transparent organization.

  3. We believe that all were created equal and that all should have fair and equal opportunities irrespective of gender.

  4. TAPWAK shall continuously strive to improve the quality of its services.

  5. TAPWAK believes in the full participation of stakeholders in order to ensure that its programmes are relevant, owned, effective and sustainable.

  6. All our activities shall be conducted in a manner that complies with the laws of the land.

  7. Members of the board as well as staff shall at all times avoid situations in which their personal interests conflict with their duties and responsibilities to the organization.

  8. Our programmes and relationships shall be conducted in accordance to the highest ethical standards.

Programme Objectives

The objectives below have been formulated to address four main problems. The first problem that TAPWAK’s programme wishes to address is the rate of new infections. The second one is that of stigma and discrimination, the third is inadequate access to psychosocial support and the fourth relates to the quality of health care among PLHIV. The first two problems have the same root causes and are therefore addressed by one set of objectives.
