The Association of People with AIDS in Kenya (TAPWAK) is a non-governmental not-for-profit organisation which was founded in July 1990 to address the health problems of people living with HIV & AIDS (PLHIV), and to provide a forum for them to give each other support and encouragement. TAPWAK was registered under the NGOs Coordination Act in September 1992 and was formally launched in Nairobi on 1st December1992. A branch office was opened at Ugunja, in Siaya District in 1998. The Purpose and Identity of TAPWAK The strategies and activities developed herein are formed by TAPWAK’s stated purpose and identity as promulgated in the statements that are reproduced below:
TAPWAK envisages a Kenyan society where there are no new HIV & AIDS infections and where those infected or affected lead quality lives free of stigmatisation and discrimination.
Mission Statement TAPWAK exists to support people living with HIV & AIDS and the affected in Kenya through effective education and advocacy as well as provision of emotional, social, economic and medical support.
To become the best HIV & AIDS organisation in Kenya, effectively contributing to national strategies through relevant and quality programmes
